The Aesthetic of the Puzzle in the Works of Georges Perec
L'esthétique du puzzle dans l'oeuvre de Georges Perec

Starting from an interest in the idea of the puzzle in the works of Georges Perec, this thesis takes as its object this game-image in order to discover its presence in Perec's writing activity in different ways and in different forms, to question it and to evaluate its efficiency, importance and relevance. Firstly, we propose an analysis of the puzzle from the theme, the structure and the writing of the essential novel-puzzle Life: A User's Manual, in order to study its action in the central story, in the narrative structure and in the scriptural process of the novel. We are then interested, within the framework of the whole of the Perecquian works, in a kind of autobiographical puzzle reconstructed from a missing piece, by starting with the study of this missing piece implying another image - the empty space – which occupies an essential position in the Perecquian writing. The last phase of our research is about the metaphor of the puzzle applied by Perec to his conception of literature; we proceed by two steps corresponding to two levels of meaning enclosed in the puzzle: that is to say by presenting the playful nature (the puzzle as a game) of the Perecquian literature on the one hand, and on the other by explaining and putting into perspective this metaphor of Perec concerning the proper image of the puzzle, including the relationships, the actions and the processes involved (the puzzle as a model). This thesis, carried out in the three frameworks of analysis of increasing dimensions, reveals the fundamental place of the puzzle in the Perecquian aesthetic, and also its modernity as a literary model.
Parti d’un intérêt pour l’idée du puzzle chez Georges Perec, ce travail se donne pour objet ce jeu-image en vue de découvrir sa présence dans l’activité d’écriture de Perec de différentes manières et sous différentes formes, de l’interroger et d’évaluer son efficacité, son importance et sa pertinence. Nous proposons d’abord une analyse du puzzle à partir des niveaux thématique, structurel et scriptural de l’incontournable roman-puzzle La Vie mode d’emploi, pour étudier son jeu dans l’histoire centrale, dans la structure narrative et dans la démarche scripturale du roman. Nous nous intéressons ensuite, dans le cadre de l’ensemble de l’œuvre perecquienne, à une espèce de puzzle autobiographique reconstitué à partir d’une pièce manquante, en commençant par l’étude de cette pièce manquante qui implique une autre image — celle de la case vide — dont nous remarquons l’essentialité par rapport à l’écriture perecquienne. Dans la dernière phase de notre recherche consacrée à une réflexion critique sur la métaphore du puzzle appliquée par Perec à sa conception de la littérature, nous procédons par deux étapes correspondant à deux niveaux de sens renfermés dans le puzzle : c’est-à-dire en expliquant la nature ludique (le puzzle en tant que jeu) de la littérature perecquienne d’un côté, et de l’autre en exposant et en mettant en perspective cette métaphore de Perec concernant l’image propre du puzzle, y compris les rapports, les actions et les processus qu’elle implique (le puzzle en tant que modèle). Ce travail mené dans les trois cadres d’analyse de dimensions croissantes amène à constater la place fondamentale du puzzle dans l’esthétique perecquienne, et aussi sa modernité en tant que modèle littéraire.
