Résumé
My fieldwork takes place in my own village. Some old neighbors are growing old and intend to remain at home. They live what Vincent Caradec called « experience of old age ». By the use of narrative paradigm, the thesis intends to analyze the situations they live in the village and their wishes to become old in their homes. As indigenous anthropologist, the fieldwork is based on conversations and situations, in which I am engaged with my interlocutors (Goffman, Gumperz). I made this anthropology of the ordinary with descriptions and literary account, with the analysis of acts of speeches, and the detection of anomalies and dissonance. Thus, I mean to seize what is experienced by my interlocutors, from their remaining days in the village to the end of their lives in nursing homes.In the first part, the thesis deals with the life my interlocutors are experiencing in their own nursing homes. The situations shows their everyday life and how they live it. I see them discovering this universe with a great amazement. Through flashbacks to the village, I try to understand what they are going through and how every single one of them, in their own way, decided to enter a specialized institution for elderly people. The close study of details and language, the various situations I live with them on the field, the particular attention given to their ways of speaking and to “anomalies” (Chauvier), allow me to understand their experience and to give a glimpse of the “parodic life” the nursing home constitutes from their point of view. With the notion of “parodic life”, this research explores the way the institution intends to take care of the lives of those they consider as “elderly people” where I see only specific interlocutors and persons.In a second part, I return to the village, at the beginning of the fieldwork. This time I observe my own way of being neighbors with my interlocutors. To stay at home in their “old age” (Caradec), they contracted various helps for the tasks of the daily life, while receiving informal help from friends, relatives and neighbors. Both are intertwined and let see more clearly the resources at their disposal in order to remain at home. If the challenge is to study what they have put in place to live their “old age” at home, this second part explores the question of “dying” at home, in their houses, in the village. I study how a certain number of decisions are taken against this desire and try to tell the story of this path that has led my interlocutors to experience the end of their lives in an institution.
J’ai mené une enquête dans le village d’où je viens, sur les devenirs vieux à la maison. Mes vieux voisins et vieilles voisines ont l’âge qu’auraient eu mes parents : ils et elles vivent ce que Vincent Caradec a nommé « l’épreuve du grand âge ». Avec l’usage du paradigme narratif, la thèse analyse les situations que traversent mes interlocuteur·trice·s au village pour vivre leurs vieillesses chez eux·elles. En tant qu’anthropologue indigène, ce travail de terrain est réalisé à partir de conversations, de situations, dans lesquelles l’anthropologue et ses interlocuteur·trice·s sont « engagé·e·s » (Goffman, Gumperz). Par la mise en récit, la description, l’analyse des pratiques langagières, l’étude des anomalies et dissonances, je réalise une anthropologie de l’ordinaire (Chauvier). Il s’agit de saisir au plus près « le vécu du vieillir » de mes interlocuteur·trice·s – depuis leurs derniers jours au village jusqu’à leur fin de vie en EHPAD.Dans une première partie, la thèse s’attache à leur vie en institution. Les situations analysent en détails les moments vécus et le quotidien de mes interlocuteur·trice·s en hébergement collectif. Je les vois découvrir cet univers avec un étonnement singulier. Par quelques retours en arrière ou flashbacks au village, je tente de faire comprendre ce qu’ils·elles traversent et comment chacun·e d’entre eux·elles, dans son parcours, a dû faire ce choix de l’institution. L’étude et la narration détaillées de ce qu’ils·elles vivent et de ce qu’ils·elles me disent, les situations que je vis sur le terrain avec eux·elles, l’attention à leur façon de parler, aux « anomalies » (Chauvier), laissent entrevoir la « vie parodique » que constitue l’EHPAD pour eux·elles, et la manière dont l’institution entend prendre en charge les vies de ceux·celles qu’elle ne cesse de voir comme des « personnes âgées ».Dans une seconde partie, je reviens au village, au début de l’enquête. J’observe cette fois ma propre manière de voisiner avec mes interlocuteur·trice·s. Pour rester vivre à la maison, ils·elles ont contractualisé un certain nombre d’aides qui s’entremêlent avec celles, plus informelles, d’ami·e·s, de parent·e·s et de voisin·e·s. Si l’enjeu est d’étudier ce qu’ils·elles ont mis en place pour vivre leur « grand âge » (Caradec) à domicile, cette deuxième partie met l’accent sur un désir contrarié : celui de « mourir » à la maison et au village. J’y étudie comment un certain nombre de décisions vont à l’encontre de ce désir, et je tente faire le récit de ce parcours qui les mène à mourir en EHPAD.
